Leadership Lessons from Thomas

I got lots of face time with Thomas driving from school to school - which was an act of complete trust in the sovereignty of God with Thomas driving. Basically, it was leadership 404 by Thomas Schneider.

It also further convinced me that the best way to grow in leadership is to hang those who are good at it. Then shut up and listen. Here are the nuggets I got from Thomas:

“I used to think that I would get my team to this certain point of maturity then I wouldn’t have to deal with certain problems ever again. That just doesn’t happen. It’s people and it’s just life and it’s just part of following Jesus.”
“I’m learning to handle different people in different ways. I used to think – you treat everybody the same. That wasn’t right. Some people need to be motivated differently. I have to learn what that is and provide it.”
“As long as a person wants to be a part of this team, will remain teachable, I will marry myself to them for the sake of the kingdom.”
(Interesting word ‘marrying.’ I asked him about it – he said that this marry is a promise, an oath to do the task ahead with someone. It almost has the same weight as a marriage commitment.)

“The best leaders are the ones you disciple up, then get to see them disciple someone else up.”
“I eat, drink, sleep, and dream about stuff that will help us reach more people with Jesus. What is God doing? Where is He leading us? Where is the enemy trying to crack in? And if I see something or think something might be a problem or issue – we deal with it. Immediately. We have too much at stake to wait to see if something is going to get worse. When we have waited – it almost always got worse. No more waiting. We deal with it.”
I love being around Thomas. He is sold-out,a Dog, reproducing leader monster. He's also a terrible driver, but in the grand scheme of things - that is okay.
